Custom Button

Display clickable buttons in chat to guide visitors and trigger actions.

Custom buttons appear in chat responses, giving visitors clear options to click. Use them to link to pages, guide conversations, or trigger specific actions.

Creating a Custom Button

  1. Go to your agent's Actions tab
  2. Click Add Action → Custom Button
  3. Configure the button:
    • Label - Text shown on the button
    • Action type - What happens when clicked
  4. Save and test in Playground

Button Action Types

Custom buttons link to a URL when clicked. HTTP/HTTPS links open in a new tab; mailto: and tel: links open the visitor's mail or phone client.

Example: "View Pricing" button linking to https://example.com/pricing

When Buttons Appear

The AI decides when buttons are relevant based on conversation context. You can guide this behavior by adding instructions to your agent's AI settings.

Add guidance to your AI instructions:

When discussing pricing, show the "View Pricing" and "Schedule Demo" buttons.

Button Configuration

Button Label

Keep labels short and action-oriented:

  • "View Pricing"
  • "Schedule Demo"
  • "Get Started"
  • "Learn More"

Button Style

Buttons inherit your agent's primary color for their background, with a contrasting label color and a small icon (external link, mail, or phone) based on the URL type.

Multiple Buttons

The AI may show several buttons in one response when relevant. Keep button choices focused — too many at once can overwhelm visitors.

Best Practices

  1. Clear labels - Use action words ("View", "Get", "Schedule")
  2. Limit options - 2-3 buttons per response keeps things focused
  3. Logical flow - Buttons should make sense in context
  4. Test thoroughly - Verify links work and actions trigger

Example Use Cases

Pricing Inquiry:

Buttons:
- "View Full Pricing" → /pricing
- "Schedule Demo" → /schedule
- "Start Free Trial" → /signup

Support Conversation:

Buttons:
- "Contact Support" → /home/help
- "View Documentation" → /docs
- "Check Status" → /status

Product Exploration:

Buttons:
- "See Features" → /features
- "Watch Demo" → /demo
- "Compare Plans" → /pricing

Combining with Other Actions

Buttons work well with other actions:

  • Show lead form after "Schedule Demo" button click
  • Trigger API call when "Check Status" is clicked
  • Display additional buttons based on responses
